Broadway In Detroit
Broadway In Detroit’s beginnings herald back to 1912 when David Tobias (D.T) Nederlander began operating the original Detroit Opera House with the Shubert Brothers. Through the years, the Nederlander family operated several Detroit area theatres including the Shubert Theatre, the Cass Theatre and the Riviera. It was the Fisher Theatre’s 1961 renovation into a legitimate Broadway house that rocketed the Fisher’s subscription base into the largest in the country at the time. The Nederlander organization went on to become one of the biggest names on Broadway, at one time controlling nine Broadway theatres with operations across the US, Canada and Great Britain.
In 2021, Broadway In Detroit became a part of The Ambassador Theatre Group. Under its leadership, Broadway In Detroit continues to present the best Broadway productions at the Fisher Theatre and other Detroit area venues including the Detroit Opera House and Music Hall. Past productions have featured Broadway’s biggest names such as Carol Channing, Zero Mostel, Robin Givens, Richard Chamberlain, Molly Ringwald, John O’Hurley and more. The Fisher Theatre has hosted the world tour premieres of such Broadway hits as Hello Dolly!, Fiddler On The Roof and Sweet Charity as well as the launch of many national tours including Billy Joel’s Movin Out and the recent West Side Story revival.
