  • From The Stage to the Balcony: Mean Girls

    • By Broadway In Detroit

Our June installment of From the Stage to the Balcony is totally Fetch as we look at the history, stories, and fun news about Mean Girls The Musical!

We’re excited to welcome Mean Girls to the Fisher Theatre in February and March 2021. The tour opened in September last year at Shae’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY. This will be the show’s Detroit premeire.

The story of Mean Girls began with the 2004 movie directed by Mark Waters, starring Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett, and Rachel McAdams. Tina Fey penned the screenplay from Rosalind Wiseman’s book.

While most fans of Mean Girls know that Tina Fey wrote its screenplay, few realize that the iconic movie had its beginnings in Rosalind Wiseman’s book “Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other realities of Adolescence.” For the tenth anniversary of the movie, Wiseman talked with The Atlantic about her experience working with Fey on crafting the screenplay, her work, and the movie.

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times, It took Tina Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond more than five years to move Mean Girls from the screen to the stage.  In talking about the musical, Fey stated “In a lot of ways I think the musical has more emotional depth than the movie, so that was a fun change in switching to this format. You get to really laugh at Gretchen’s jokes but really feel pain for her and also understand why Janis is so angry on a visceral level. It’s exciting to be able to open up the characters that way.”

Mean Girls The Musical found its way to the stage with its out-of-town try-out debuting at the National Theatre in Washington, DC on October 31, 2017.

It then moved to The August Wilson theatre on Broadway where it had its first preview on March 12, 2018 and official opening on April 8. The musical received 12 Tony Award Nominations including Best Musical. It went on to win the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

The cast did a Google Talk in October 2019 with many of original Broadway cast members that provides a great behind the scenes look at creating the show and the cast.
